Making a difference to people’s lives is one of the main reasons why working in the public sector is so rewarding. Leading a housing service of a local council enables you to see the positive impact of your work first-hand.

Improving the quality of life for our residents has long been one of Ashford Borough Council’s key priorities. Over the last decade we have built and purchased social housing, set up a letting’s agency, managed private landlord properties and created our own property company.  Ashford Borough Council is enthusiastic about delivering innovative projects such as the recent completion of a residential, zero-carbon, modular-build in a car park close to local amenities.

The Council has been through a challenging period recently, leading to a self-referral to the Regulator of Social Housing in 2024.  As a team we have embraced this positively as we are passionate about delivering excellent services for our residents.  We have embarked on a period of improvement within our repairs and maintenance department, ASB handling and engagement with our tenants.

As a landlord we are looking to make considerable investment within our current homes to make safety and sustainability improvements.  Our target is to make sure all our homes are at and EPC C rating or above.  There is also a drive to increase our current stock by 1,000 homes within the next four years.  We currently have a build plan of 400 homes and are in negotiation for a further 250 new builds.

To take this work to the next level we are now looking for an Assistant Director of Housing to drive forward the service, to build on recent progress and lead a team of dedicated, hardworking housing professionals.

If you are a passionate and authentic leader with extensive housing experience, who understands the current and emerging pressures within the social housing sector, then we would love to hear from you.

Devolution
With devolution news and talks evolving across the country for local authorities, we understand that there may be some uncertainty for those currently serving within the sector. Although Kent and Medway have not been included in the Devolution Priority Programme, discussions continue in this area.  Kent, Medway and all District and Borough Councils in the Southeast will continue to work closely with each other to deliver vital services to our communities.  This is an exciting, but stable time to join our organisation.

Ashford Borough Council recognises the need to ensure the welfare of children, young people and vulnerable adults when they come into contact with the services we provide

We welcome applications from the Armed Forces Community

Company

Ashford's countryside is full of attractions; the North Down, the flat farmlands, the exposed areas of the Romney Marsh and the mixture of woods and rolling countryside of the Weald of Kent.

Leisure activities include hot air ballooning, gliding, golf, angling and walking. There is also an opportunity to watch international athletics at the Julie Rose Stadium.

Ashford is situated at the centre of the Channel Tunnel corridor. Within the corridor is the world's busiest roll-on-roll-off shipping terminal at Dover, the Channel Tunnel and Euro Tunnel at Folkestone, the M20 motorway, five domestic railway lines, High Speed 1 and the Eurostar International Passenger Terminal. There is also easy access to Kent International Airport (Manston) and the deep-water port at Sheerness. Such an extensive communications network has generated a varied commercial base. Ashford boasts Europe's most modern livestock market and award winning English wines, racing dinghies, rocking horses, goldsmiths and roulette wheels.
