Job Details
This is an exciting opportunity to join a dynamic and forward thinking authority in a key role, supporting and reporting to the Head of Legal and Democratic Services and Monitoring Officer.
We’re looking for a talented and ambitious legal professional who wants the chance to grow as a leader and take the next step in their career. And while you will bring your own areas of local government legal specialism to the role, your ability and enthusiasm to lead and support our experienced and dedicated corporate legal team is key to this appointment.
We are an innovative authority, and with this brings an abundance of interesting and challenging work. Your time will be divided between supporting the Head of Service, leading the corporate legal team and carrying out your own casework. You will be responsible for allocating and managing the throughput of the legal team’s work, working closely with the council’s senior lawyers, officers and elected members to enable the organisation to achieve its objectives. You will deputise for the Head of Legal and Democratic Services as required and will act as a Deputy Monitoring Officer.
The post-holder will be a member of the council’s Senior Managers’ Forum, with regular leadership learning and the chance to help influence strategic policy and decision-making. You will have significant knowledge and experience of local government law and governance and a commercial approach to managing a team of lawyers.
This is a fantastic opportunity for someone looking for the next step on their leadership path, or perhaps a sideways move from a larger organisation to lead a broader team, with development opportunities aplenty.
For further information or an informal discussion please contact Karen Dunn, Head of Legal and Democratic Services at kdunn@testvalley.gov.uk
This is a politically restricted post.
Closing Date: 1 July 2024
Interviews: From 8 July 2024
Company
The extensive area of the Test Valley borough is one of the most beautiful areas in Southern England.
The River Test and its associated tributaries - the Mecca of trout fisherman - runs through the entire length of the area from north to south.
The countryside is typical Hampshire downland interspersed with woods and copses and high quality agricultural land. The area contains two principal towns, Andover and Romsey. Andover in the north, the larger of the two, is an expanding town with a modern shopping centre and there are plans for a new cinema and theatre.
There is a leisure centre and substantial industrial developments, together with further fully serviced land available for lease by industrialists. Romsey in the south is an ancient medieval town with its Abbey and Broadlands, the home of the late Earl Mountbatten of Burma. From just south of Newbury to the Northern edge of Southampton Test Valley, like its river, makes up western Hampshire.
The Borough comprises the growing commercial centre of Andover, the country market town of Romsey and the beautiful countryside of the valley of the River Test, centred on Stockbridge. Test Valley must have one of the most diverse characters in Hampshire: its rural character reflects the North Wessex Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, occupying more than 10% of the Borough, some 25 Sites of Special Scientific Interest, 38 Conservation Areas and thousands of listed buildings.
Yet on the other hand Test Valley has a vibrant economy with a number of household name companies with local headquarters, low unemployment and business sites totalling well over a million square feet available for development.
