We’re looking for an exceptional human to join our management team.  You’ll be working in a dynamic environment – responsible for the service who look after our ERP (integrated finance, procurement, HR and payroll system) and other similar business systems used by 15,000 people in nine different organisations.

Our purpose is to provide digital and technology support for the systems shared by West Northamptonshire Council and our partners Cambridgeshire County Council, Milton Keynes City Council and North Northamptonshire Council. You'll join us on our journey as we create better end-to-end services for our councils and residents.

Our technology is key to our service, customers and partners, and we want to push the limits on self-service, innovation, automation, integration, and reusable functionality across multiple digital channels; while maintaining a strong focus on user need

This role is based in Northampton and we have a team based from Alconbury in Cambridgeshire, however we also offer remote flexible working.

We need smart people! You’ll work with like-minded, innovative people; you’ll take old ways of doing things and challenge them. We’re big on removing barriers and busting constraints, so you’ll have what you need to help us transform this into a forward thinking, digital local authority that delivers public services in a progressive way.  People depend on what we deliver so what you do will make a real difference to peoples’ lives.

Is this you? If so, we’d like to hear from you.

Our benefits

We offer a wide range of benefits to our employees, these include:

  • Generous annual leave entitlement starting at 28 days annual leave per year, 29 days for senior managers (pro rata, depending on how many hours per week you work), plus bank holidays. An additional 5 days, linked to continuous service, and ability to purchase up to 6 weeks additional leave per year.
  • Cycle to Work scheme.
  • Local Government Pension Scheme plus immediate life cover (3 times your annual salary from day one) and ill-health protection.
  • Employee discounts with local and national retailers, days out, finance, health and beauty, travel and eating out plus lots more.
  • Car Lease scheme
  • Professional subscriptions / registration - if your job description requires that you are registered with or are a member of a professional body, WNC will pay for your professional subscription or membership fees
  • Employee Assistance Programme - We have an employee support programme run by Health Assured, an independent, external organisation. Health Assured is available for you and your immediate family members, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year and includes telephone counselling, legal advice, bereavement support and medical information.
  • Ongoing training and development opportunities.
  • A variety of flexible working options to support your work/life balance, including full or part time, term time, 9-day fortnight, etc. (subject to business needs).
  • Our West Ways of Working – We want our workforce to thrive, and we equip our employees with the right technology to support hybrid and collaborative working, on or off site, depending on the role.
  • Making a difference - If you want to use your skills and experience with an organisation that are genuinely invested in making a difference, are committed to improving people's lives, and whose success has a direct impact on the wellbeing of your family, friends and people in your local area, then West Northamptonshire Council is the place for you.
What will you be doing?

As part of the Digital, Technology & Innovation Management Team, you will be our Head of Service, responsible for the applications provided to our established shared service. You will lead our enthusiastic and capable team, fostering a proactive environment where thinking, doing, and challenging the status quo enable us to achieve our best work.

This is a 12 month fixed term role.

About you

You’ll need:

  • Natural openness, curiosity and optimism (a bit of bravery probably wouldn’t hurt either)

  • Technical depth and flair (and the ability to articulate its impact to non-technical people)

  • A team-driven approach to delivery

  • A responsive and adaptable attitude

  • A passion for making a positive impact for individuals and services

  • Excellent interpersonal skills and be able to represent our service in a positive and professional way, communicating effectively with a range of stakeholders at all levels and in multiple organisations.
