This is an exciting opportunity to become a crucial part of our Finance Management Team at Wakefield Council.

The Group Finance Manager position is an integral role within our service which supports both the Service Manager and Chief Finance Officer secure proper stewardship of Council resources and deliver effective financial management arrangements across the Council.

We are seeking a qualified accountant (CIPFA or equivalent) with excellent communication skills and a proven track record in respect of leading a team to achieve service objectives.

The successful candidate would initially lead the Financial Accounting, Integrity and Controls Team and key aspects of the role will include;

• provision of professional financial advice (including policy developments and/or legislation changes) to elected members, Corporate Directors, Heads of Service and Service Managers
•  the preparation and presentation of reports, briefings, and attendance at appropriate meetings
•  the production of year-end financial statements and associated notes to the accounts in accordance with statutory and best practice requirements
•  representing Financial Services at professional and other meetings as required, including locally, regionally and nationally
•  liaison with external auditors
•  leading a team in providing specialist financial technical services across the Council including taxation
•  identifying and implementing improvements to the Council’s key financial processes
