About Us:

At the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea council, we aim to provide high-quality services to improve the lives of our residents and to make the borough a better place for people to live in, work in, and visit.

Our Bi-Borough Special Educational Needs (SEN) service covers children and young people in Westminster City Council as well as our own. We are proud to be one of the top five-performing local authorities for meeting statutory deadlines.  We recently achieved an outstanding SEND inspection report which details we have high ambitions for our children and young people

The Role:

The Children and Families Act 2014 has had a significant impact on the delivery of SEN services resulting in a fast-paced, complex interpersonal environment that requires an enhanced level of communication and case management skills.

In this role, you will lead on the statutory assessment process with a team of nine, you will ensure all relevant legislation and guidance is adhered to, develop and maintain good practice standards, and provide robust, accurate advice and guidance on complex casework.

You will ensure casework is legally compliant whilst remaining child-centred, paying due regard to the views of parents, as well as managing relationships with families, headteachers and SENCOs, relevant professionals such as educational psychologists, social workers, health and other relevant agencies.

In addition, you will work alongside the Team Managers for the Primary and Secondary Teams who oversee the annual review process for those children and young people with EHCPs.  You will provide appropriate levels of individual support to team members, motivate colleagues and identify staff development needs, and professionally share sensitive information with partner agencies.

At present, we are working on a purposeful led hybrid model.

About You:

We are looking for someone proactive rather than reactive, who understands that each case is unique, and who recognises the different position in which parents and educators are in. Everyone here is honest, willing to see things from other perspectives, and keen to learn from everyone – including parents. You will need the very best communication and case management skills to thrive, as well as personal resilience.

You will need to demonstrate enhanced knowledge, skills and understanding in a significant area related to SEN, good knowledge and understanding of the key legislative frameworks relating to the provision of SEND services to children and young people, and successful staff and casework management experience within a SEND, education or other related Local Authority service.

You should also bring demonstrable knowledge of other relevant legislative frameworks such as the Care Act, as well as an understanding of the changing national agenda for schools and how to interpret the implications of this for the SEND Service.

We offer rewarding work and streamlined processes across two diverse London boroughs with a low staff turnover – and we develop our own, with plenty of training and skills. Ours is a highly regarded and supportive, professional team, who are treated with respect and instil confidence in the parents who use us.
