Head of Economic Development and Skills
Based in South East London and bordering North West Kent, Bexley is within the Thames Gateway, an area designated as a national priority for urban regeneration. We have a real passion and a commitment to improving the economic prosperity of all our residents, as well as our current and future businesses, and are seeking a Head of Economic Development and Skills to lead the agenda, turning strategy into practical action.
This is a broad role, and you will lead a large, established team of c40 professionals that deliver services across economic development, employment & skills, town centres, inward investment, business support and more. We will look to you to proactively and positively engage our residents and businesses to design and deliver relevant economic support programmes, building upon our success of securing funding to kickstart many of these.
With two Business Improvement Districts, four major town centres and a further eighteen that we support, you will ensure we deliver targeted economic interventions to all corners of our borough. You will build upon our strong local employment & skills links and develop further sub-regional partnerships that deliver direct positive impact within the borough.
As a senior figure within our innovation centre in Thamesmead, The Engine House, you will provide strategic and operational leadership to attract new businesses to Bexley, as well as support our growing mix of start-up and SME businesses.
You will be a positive people manager that understands how to get the best out of those around them, ensuring the collective skill and expertise of the team is used to deliver practical change to our residents and businesses.
You will have experience of leading and delivering complex economic programmes with insightful understanding of the cross-cutting nature of economic activity in a local government setting. You will not only be able to develop strategic programmes, but also have a demonstrable track record of delivering positive outcomes through their successful delivery.
You will build upon our existing well-established partnerships as a strong collaborator and confident system leader, ensuring there is collective focus in delivering our ambitions for the borough. You will be politically astute and be able to present yourself positively with confidence and conviction to inspire both respect and trust amongst colleagues, businesses, partners, and peers.
