Welcome to Croydon Council – and a role that will challenge you and fulfil you like never before. As our Corporate Director of Resources, you’ll work collaboratively as part of the new corporate team of directors and with our Chief Executive to deliver the Croydon Renewal Improvement Plan, our priorities and ways of working, and a financially sustainable budget by March 2024.
In this role, you will with direct responsibility for managing our significant budget and a portfolio of financial, non-housing property, commercial and legal services. In particular, we’ll need you to provide high quality professional advice to the Leader and Cabinet, chief executive as well as various internal control Boards and external bodies on all matters related to our financial and legal functions. That will include everything from housing revenue, internal and external audit, risk management and anti-fraud initiatives through to our asset and facilities management, health and safety, and council investments in other entities, companies and shareholdings.
There will be difficult decisions to make and tough budgets to deliver. But you’ll relish the chance to apply your ideas and ingenuity to find the best ways forward.
Your specific responsibilities will include:
- Providing direction, leadership and guidance to staff in the finance, commercial and legal functions and ensuring full adherence to best practice in legal standards and financial management
- Managing risk and opportunity across our functions to ensure that Croydon residents’ interests are legally safeguarded, and the council operates within its legal powers and duties at all times
- Leading the delivery of the financial recovery plan and the medium-term financial strategy 2021-2024 as part of the Croydon Renewal Improvement Plan
- Heading up our budget setting process, taking responsibility for designing and implementing a suitable process for engaging members and other stakeholders in budget decisions and arriving at an annual balanced and deliverable budget
- Monitoring and overseeing the overall affordability of our activities to mitigate risks and ensure ongoing affordability
