East Sussex is a great county in which to practice public health leadership. We know our needs, and have a skilled and capable workforce addressing these needs and making best use of the resources we have available. Based in Lewes, just 10 minutes by train from Brighton and just over an hour from Central London, we offer a flexible approach to working, and the support of a large team and stable leadership.

We have an aged and ageing population who bring both challenges and opportunities to our health and social care system. Our children are a great resource for the future of our county and its economy, but there are many challenges, such as levels of child poverty ranging from 10 to 25% across our District and Boroughs. Ofsted recently rated our social services for children and families as outstanding.

We have made some excellent progress on suicide prevention and mental health improvement; however we have the challenge of managing suicide prevention at a significant place of high risk; and need to make the case for further attention to the levels of general mental wellbeing in all of our residents.
