It’s a busy and demanding time here at Sandwell Council. Our new corporate plan: Big Plans for a Great Place, sets out our ambition to deliver Vision 2030, creating a healthier, more successful future for the people of Sandwell – working as one council and one team with our residents, businesses and partners.

We want to create opportunities to put Sandwell on the map, creating a borough where people are proud of their local area, have better paid jobs and opportunities, supported by increased skills for our workforce and more opportunities for young people.

About us

Sandwell is made up of six historic boroughs covering a patchwork of towns and townships, urban villages and localities that developed with industrialisation. People very much identify with their local community. Sandwell is characterised by widespread deprivation with pockets of prosperity, for instance in Wednesbury and Smethwick. It is the 12th most deprived English local authority out of a total of 317.

Like any large, metropolitan borough, Sandwell faces many challenges. This brings with it a significant number of opportunities that we aim to build on over the next five years, including the new Midland Metropolitan University Hospital, the new Sandwell Aquatics Centre which will host the swimming and diving events for the 2022 Commonwealth Games, the extension to the Midland Metro line, HS2, and many planned new homes.

About the role

As Director of Borough Economy, you’ll be responsible for all the front line operational “place” services (excluding housing) while driving our neighbourhood delivery agenda. Your focus will be on maximising opportunities within each town to meet residents’ needs and transforming our local services and spaces so that our community can develop and thrive. This will see you take strategic responsibility for a number of areas including:

•  Climate Change
•  Transport
•  Fleet
•  Environmental Services including licensing and regulatory   services
•  Waste & Recycling
•  Community safety
•  Leisure and Tourism
•  Highways maintenance

About you

With significant experience in a senior management role within a local authority or relevant setting, you’ll need a professional or management qualification (Degree level or equivalent) together with evidence of continuous professional development.

You’ll also need to have experience of successfully managing and delivering complex change and improvement programmes and the motivation, influence and drive to deliver on corporate priorities. Join us in making these exciting plans a reality.
