It’s a busy and demanding time here at Sandwell Council. Sandwell is made up of six historic boroughs covering a patchwork of towns and townships, urban villages and localities that developed with industrialisation. People very much identify with their local community. Sandwell is characterised by widespread deprivation with pockets of prosperity, for instance in Wednesbury and Smethwick. It is the 12th most deprived English local authority out of a total of 317.
Like any large, metropolitan borough, Sandwell faces many challenges. This brings with it a significant number of opportunities that we aim to build on over the next five years, including the new Midland Metropolitan University Hospital, the new Sandwell Aquatics Centre which will host the swimming and diving events for the 2022 Commonwealth Games, the extension to the Midland Metro line, HS2, and many planned new homes.

About the role
We have an ambitious programme for housing delivery over the coming years with plans to deliver approximately 630 units made up of houses, bungalows and flats. As Director of Housing, it’ll be up to you to lead on all housing commissioning, delivery and management functions to ensure that the priority placed on housing in the Borough is delivered. With the objective of improving the quality of accommodation across the sector, you’ll also be responsible for a number of areas including :
- Sandwell Council housing stock
- Tenant Management Organisations
- Homelessness Prevention Strategy
- Private Housing & Improvement
- Housing Policy & Insight
- Temporary & Independent Living
- Accommodation Housing Strategy, Asset maintenance Revenues, benefits and debt recovery
- Home improvement agency HMOs
With significant experience in a senior management role within a local authority or relevant setting, you’ll need a professional or management qualification (Degree level or equivalent) together with evidence of continuous professional development.
You’ll also need to have experience of successfully managing and delivering complex change and improvement programmes and the motivation, influence and drive to deliver on corporate priorities. Join us in making these exciting plans a reality.
