Head of Skills and Post 16
Plymouth has an established vision to take its place as a vibrant, European waterfront city where an outstanding quality of life is enjoyed by everyone. As the largest city on the south coast of Britain, the growth agenda is ambitious with a £1bn investment programme. Our Joint Local Plan highlights our ambition to be a major economic driver for the heart of the south west whilst being a healthy city with an international reputation for marine specialism and famous for our waterfront, maritime heritage and culture.
Employment in the city offers many opportunities with a strong manufacturing base and vibrant, specialist businesses with a requirement for highly skilled staff. However too many children do not achieve well and leave school without the qualifications and skills or direction they need to move on to their next destination.
This is a high priority for Plymouth City Council and partners, including employers, and we are looking for a new Head of Service to work alongside colleagues to tackle issues through partnership. We’re looking for an experienced leader who recognises that collaboration will be necessary to raise standards, influence the post 16 and HE system, deliver effective adult education offers and work with employers to create solutions to our skills gaps. You will be joining us at the start of a citywide plan for economic and educational recovery and our ‘Resurgam’ programme will be instrumental in building on former strengths and addressing new challenges.
The post is a newly established, permanent leadership role. In this role you will embed our approach to how we influence, support and challenge our educational and skills landscape to improve the employability offer to residents. If you have proven experience at a senior level in a post 16 setting or related capability and can build positive and credible relationships with a wide range of partners, then this is a role that offers you the potential to extend your expertise and add real value to our senior education and economic development team.
