Ensuring a sustainable legacy for Bolton

Imagine a diverse town full of contrasts, a strong identity and a population who are very proud to call it home. Its town centre is bustling, lively and is the focal point of a recently launched £1bn town centre masterplan – an ambitious regeneration programme creating employment, retail, housing and leisure opportunities.  The economy is already thriving, high-quality education is evident and increasingly businesses are grown out of the university, based on high quality research and innovation.  Our exciting infrastructure and employment initiatives such as Logistics North and ‘People’ services continue to deliver good outcomes.  Engaging with our citizens and communities is paramount and our top-class events programme provides fantastic opportunities for us to bring people together.  We are home to the hugely popular Winter Festival, the regionally and nationally acclaimed, biggest and best Food and Drink Festival, Iron Man and Iron Kids attract competitors from around the globe and we have a wide range of exciting and stimulating cultural events.  This is a truly welcoming place where people choose to study, work, invest and put down roots – Welcome to Bolton!

From solid foundations and innovative thinking we have created the Bolton 2030 vision, derived from pride in our place and the aspirations of local people, with a simple ambition at its heart; a borough in which our children will grow up in a vibrant place, built on robust cohesive communities, successful businesses and healthy residents.

The Deputy Director is responsible for all front-line Place based operational services, including Waste Management and Recycling, Fleet Management and Maintenance, Bereavement Services, Security and Response, Social Needs Transport and our traded services including Building Cleaning, School Meals, Bolton Markets and The Albert Halls

With the majority of services being delivered in house, experience of managing and developing effective relationships with staff and unions is critical as you help us further modernise our services, and ensure that the physical space of Bolton is a place where communities and individuals can thrive and be proud of.  You will promote a ‘One Council’ culture, working in partnership with internal colleagues, as well as promoting and strengthening external relationships outside the borough.

In addition to the varied operational elements of this role, the Deputy Director of Place will be required to frequently assist the Director of Place in the full execution of their duties and responsibilities. We are looking for someone who understands and values their staff, works effectively with stakeholders and partners while also demonstrating clear political understanding, empathy and sensitivity.

This is a fantastic opportunity to play a leading role in the Bolton story and to be part of our unique Bolton Family #TeamBolton, ensuring that our residents and businesses become increasingly active, connected and prosperous.
