A Brighter Future for our Children and Young People

Reading is a thriving unitary council in the heart of Berkshire, serving a population of 180,000. It is a vibrant and growing borough with a booming economy, excellent transport links, good schools and exciting opportunities for our residents. Despite this, some aspects of our children’s services – particularly social care – are not performing as well as they should. We are determined to rectify this to ensure our most vulnerable children and families receive the support they need and deserve. We have established a new company, Brighter Futures for Children, which is focused on the development and provision of first class services. Wholly owned by the Council and one of only eight alternative delivery organisations, our Board and governance arrangements are in place and working well.

As the statutory DCS working across the Council and the Company you will have responsibility for the delivery of the whole portfolio of children’s services, including education and early help, and you will lead and embed the improvements needed within our social care practice.

You will hold an executive directorship on the Company board and your corporate role will allow you to influence across the wider agenda including housing, community and place shaping.

With successful senior leadership experience within children’s services, you will bring a strong focus on good social care practice, workforce stability and innovation. You will be employed by the Council and seconded for 80% of your time to the Company.

You will work closely with supportive political leadership, the Company board, including the Managing Director, officers and partners including the business community. Our DCS will be willing to work in a shared leadership team and commit to the opportunities of the company approach. There is a real opportunity in Reading and in this role to make an immediate and direct impact on the lives of our children.
