Southampton is a global city of opportunity and this is your chance to be part of the key team driving both the place and public services to the next generation.  The City Council is at the forefront of shaping the future of this unique place, creating growth and investment at the same time as we work to improve and modernise services so that our customers, residents and businesses thrive.  Under the leadership of our new Chief Executive, Sandy Hopkins, we are embarking on a programme of change and a wider review of resources for delivery. Some of this change will help empower our staff to think and act commercially, continue building partnerships and shape new and improved models of delivery.  As Executive Director, Finance & Commercialism you will be working at the top table, playing a key leadership role across the organisation and at the forefront of our commercialisation agenda. You will breathe energy, creativity and innovation into the financial perspective of our organisation whilst building a corporate culture grounded in an understanding of the cost and value of our public services.

About the role

You will lead and develop progressive finance and commercialism, ensuring we are a fit for purpose, forward looking organisation, with highly performing colleagues, directed by ambitious plans and supported by excellent business focused services.

Under your leadership, your teams will provide outstanding advice and support across the Council’s cooperative of services and businesses, embedding commercial practice and securing the best possible outcomes and value for our customers, residents and businesses

As part of the Council’s Executive Management Board, you will provide strategic advice and expertise to help shape our long term vision and enable us to respond swiftly to emerging opportunities and challenges.

We see our Executive Director, Finance & Commercialism as the Council’s deal maker, working with global and local businesses and partners including major developers to secure investment and growth.

About you

If you are a high energy, creative and commercial finance director then this could be the role for you.  We need someone with the flair and imagination to take our ambitious plans and ensure they are underpinned with outstanding financial and risk management.  You will be a people person, comfortable fronting important relationships for the Council.

Across the organisation you will be seen as a champion for a commercial approach to public service, demonstrating and embedding practice that delivers both financial and social returns.  Your deep expertise of financial management will be coupled with an ability to horizon scan and proactively manage risk.  The post acts as the Council’s Section 151 Officer so you will need to hold a professional accountancy qualification (CIMA, CIPFA, ACCA, ACA) as well as a passion for good governance and business practices.
