This post is ‘politically restricted’ as defined in Section 2(1g) of the 1989 Local Government and Housing Act

A vacancy has arisen for a suitably experienced and qualified individual to lead a small but cohesive team in the delivery of a responsive, cost effective and professional Legal Service to the Council and other organisations as required.  Assuming the role of the Chief Legal Officer for the Council and ensuring that high quality legal and procedural advice is provided at all stages of the Council’s decision making, you will assist the Monitoring Officer in achieving a strong corporate governance culture, with decision making by members and officers meeting the highest standards of ethical and corporate governance.

About You - A qualified solicitor or barrister with a current practising certificate and law degree or equivalent qualification, you will have substantial experience of operating at a senior level either in or for an in-house local government legal services section.  Experience of a wide range of local authority law, in particular Governance, planning, contracts, complex cases/work matters are essential as are experience of alternative delivery models including  council companies, Joint Ventures and Trusts.   

With experience of managing staff and demonstrable experience of managing a full and substantial workload of matters of the highest sensitivity, complexity and diversity without supervision, you will have detailed experience of the law, governance and the ethical framework applicable to local government. Able to analyse complex situations and make decisions that result in positive outcomes you will be a customer orientated, approachable and flexible individual who displays tact and diplomacy when handling sensitive and often contentious matters.
