Job Description

The post is offered on a full time basis of 37 hours per week. The Borough of Barrow-in-Furness is situated at the southern tip of Cumbria, on the northern shores of Morecambe Bay and set against the spectacular backdrop of the English Lake District Mountains.  It is surrounded by beautiful beaches and is a bustling Victorian town with a proud industrial heritage and a long association with shipbuilding and maritime activities.  The area is perfect for people wanting an active lifestyle with easy access to beaches and the Lake District.

The housing is second to none and very reasonably priced. The role is also commutable from the M6 and the surrounding areas with one of the most scenic journeys in the country.  The local economy of the Borough is booming as never before as a result of the Astute and Dreadnought Submarine Programmes, offshore energy developments and investment by local companies.  In contrast, public sector resources and the ability to provide high quality public services have reduced significantly.

We are looking for an exceptional Executive Director with proven ability, skills and vision to strengthen the Council’s management and governance arrangements, to drive operational delivery from services, extend the Council’s influence and develop partnerships and collaboration where and when it matters.

You will maintain open and supportive relationships with elected Members, staff and partners to realise our long term vision and deliver the Council Plan.

You will be a visible, strong and effective leader with broad experience across a range of services and will be positive and motivated about the opportunity to deliver our vision, priorities and services, bringing along staff and key stakeholders.

You will be in charge of the operational divisions within the Executive Directorate; democratic and electoral services, the Housing Department (we are a stock-holding authority), community services (amenities, waste, leisure) and, regeneration and the built environment (public protection, planning and building control, and property services).

The successful candidate will be automatically enrolled in the Local Government Pension Scheme and will be required to obtain a Basic Disclosure.
