Southampton is undergoing an amazing transformation. Since the launch of our City Centre Master Plan in 2012, we have secured over £1.9 billion of new investment into the city, unemployment has been cut to just 1.5%, and over 4,000 new homes have been built or have planning consent. In just five years we have cemented our position as the economic powerhouse of the south coast and created new training and job opportunities for over 10,000 residents. We are expanding our Economic Development and Skills team to further drive this programme of growth, investment and improvement and wish to recruit talented and experienced individuals to play key roles in taking forward a number of exciting projects.

We have an exciting opportunity for a Strategic Skills Manager to join the Economic Development and Skills team in Southampton City Council.
The Strategic Skills Manager role will require someone who can demonstrate a solid understanding of the skills needed of the area and a track record in raising aspiration, developing and implementing programmes to meet the needs of local employers and resident population.
It is essential for you to have an understanding of the skills and training system and the role of the local authority in promoting and providing further education, learning and skills.
The successful candidate will lead on post- 16 progression and participation, ensure that the further, adult, higher education and training offer meets the needs of young people, the wider community and employers, encourage ambition and support participation in learning and apprenticeships.
You will be responsible for a team of managers engaged in Employment and Skills Plans, Careers support, higher level skills progression and Apprenticeships, you will have strong management skills and an appetite to grow the team’s role and influence in the local economy and improve outcomes for residents and businesses.
To be successful in the role you will be educated to a degree level qualification or equivalent. You will have excellent IT skills, including use of self service, digital user platforms and MS Office. You will also be pro-active and able to use your own initiative and possess good influencing and negotiation skills.
