Job role

The challenges facing children’s services are significant for all authorities, but at Leicestershire County Council we are well placed to support our children, young people and families and make a significant difference to their wellbeing and life chances. Following an Ofsted inspection, we were rated as ‘needing improvement’ in early 2017, but with many positive elements highlighted in the report. We have since implemented a robust action plan supported by dedicated funding, and a new senior team has been put in place.

Working closely with the Lead Member, and reporting to the Chief Executive, our new Director of Children and Family Services will grasp the challenges ahead. A clear emphasis on performance and fi nancial management will be key to our future success, as will the development of a new and sharply focused early help service. Our relationships with schools and academies are strong (with good trading and supportive links) but will need to be kept under review and refreshed within what is a fast changing legislative environment.

There is an ambitious transformation programme across the County Council and the new Director will have the opportunity to work corporately in tackling the wider challenges facing the authority and our partners. Of course, in working for a well-run and stable organisation with a clear plan and approach for the future, rest assured you will have the support you need to make your mark and help develop and sustain a high-quality service.

The role carries the statutory DCS responsibility, but we are open minded about the professional background of candidates. Instead, your passion for improving outcomes, your partnership skills, and your ability to offer strategic and sustainable solutions will be paramount, as will your exceptional leadership and management skills.
