This year, we are celebrating 20 years since becoming a unitary authority – and we have lots to be positive about.

Over the two decades we have built an enviable reputation for service excellence, innovation and sound resource management. We are very proud of our recent ‘Good’ Ofsted judgement which pointed to our ability to support all children and young people in the borough, with a particular focus on the most deprived or vulnerable.

We also have several outstanding schools and a successful ‘schools alliance’ focusing on improving attainment and performance.

Of course, tough challenges remain along with the opportunity to further improve. Like many other authorities we need to reduce demand, bring down the numbers of looked after children in the system, and work even more closely with our health partners.

All in all, it is a great time for a new Director of Children’s Services and Education to be joining us in what we believe would be a rewarding and career enhancing move.

Our responsibilities towards children and young people have always been taken seriously and the rest of the council and partners work closely together to ensure success.

We have clear and ambitious plans, a stable and highly collaborative senior management team, and supportive relationships between officers and elected members.

Reporting to the chief executive, our new director will be the statutory DCS, and we are therefore seeking candidates with a track record of success as a senior manager in a relevant children’s service.

We are not prescriptive about your professional background, but you will need a strong understanding of social care and how to best support our most vulnerable children.

Above all, candidates will need to demonstrate a determination to keep the momentum going, improve outcomes and influence the wider corporate agenda.

Closing date: 18 May 2018.
