Aberdeenshire is the fourth largest authority in Scotland in terms of land and sixth largest in population size. It is a rural area with outstanding scenery and built heritage with bustling towns and many active local communities.

Aberdeenshire Council operates a range of community based and educational facilities for the arts and leisure, including swimming pools, leisure centres, libraries, museums and visitor attractions.

The Council works closely with the voluntary and independent sectors and other public agencies to promote cultural and sporting activities and operates first class sports and arts development services.

More than £500,000 of financial support is awarded annually to local sporting and cultural organisations.

Aberdeenshire is a predominantly rural area with a historical dependence on agriculture, fishing and forestry, which remain important industry sectors along with food processing.

Oil and gas have driven economic diversification, employment and an increasing population. St. Fergus Gas terminal processes around 15% of the UK's natural gas requirements, Fraserburgh is the largest prawn landing port in Britain, Peterhead is the leading UK port for pelagic and white fish landings as well as being the area's principal deep water harbour serving the energy sector and Westhill houses the world's largest concentration of sub-sea engineering capability. Tourism is growing, based on spectacular scenery, natural and built heritage, golf and the Cairngorms National Park.

Aberdeenshire's road network, regularly ranked amongst the best maintained in Scotland, provides high quality access across the area as does a range of award winning public transport services. Travel destinations around the area are serviced by road, rail, air and sea links for passengers and freight. The A96 and A90 provide the main road links to Inverness and the north and to the central belt respectively. Expanding park and ride and rail infrastructure coupled to improve timetabling, provide good travel options for travellers.
