About Antrim Borough Council

Antrim Town is situated on the shore of Lough Neagh, which is the largest inland waterway within the United Kingdom. The Lough is famous for its eel fishing and caters for many water-based recreational pursuits.

The Antrim area comprises the town of Antrim and the surrounding villages of Crumlin, Randalstown, Toomebridge, Templepatrick and Parkgate. The land area of the Borough is some 200 square miles. The Council was given Borough Status in May 1977.

An Order designating Antrim for development as a New Town was made on 7 July 1966 and distinguished an area of some 3,750 acres (about six square miles) centred in the town as a site for the main development.

Since the re-organisation of local services in 1973 this work is now being carried out by Government Departments - Northern Ireland Housing Executive, Borough Council and other Public Bodies.

The main industry in the area is farming (mostly livestock), the remainder being mostly service industries. Belfast International Airport is located within the area at Aldergrove, which is four miles from Antrim.
