About Tameside Metropolitan Borough Council

Tameside is only minutes from Manchester city centre and the Peak District. Within Tameside, there are three river valley country parks.

Tameside boasts a range of popular annual events such as the internationally renowned brass band competitions, Tulip Sunday and the Canals Festival each July.

There are many cultural opportunities in Tameside including the theatre, concerts, art galleries, exhibitions and museums, including the popular canalside Portland Basin Heritage Museum. There is also a full range of sports and leisure centres.

Shoppers can enjoy everything from traditional markets - Ashton's monthly farmers market is now the biggest in the north west - to shopping centres and retail parks. There is a new multiplex at Ashton Moss, with ten-pin bowling nearby, and the 1200-seat Tameside Hippodrome is the venue for large-scale touring by drama, music and dance companies.

Tameside is at the heart of the country's second largest regional centre, between Manchester city centre and the beautiful Peak District. Tameside provides a mix of urban and rural living, with the peace and quiet of the countryside minutes from vibrant night-life and culture. Inward investment is at an all-time high.

New developments include a major retail park in Denton, St Petersfield business district, creating 3,000 jobs in Ashton-under-Lyne, and, nearby, the extensive Ashton Moss site. Soon to start is a new canal marina in Droylsden, with high-quality housing, leisure such as restaurant / pub / hotel, some commercial development and speciality shops.

The Council has won many awards for its customer service and innovative web-based technology. Tameside has excellent transport links. It's at the heart of the North-West motorway network with junctions on the M60 and M67. The Borough is only 20 minutes from Manchester Airport and is served by the Trans-Pennine railway line. Inter-city services are fast and construction work on the Metrolink from Manchester city centre into Ashton-under-Lyne is underway.
