Make Birmingham a great place to live, work and visit.

This is a defining moment. For the people of Birmingham, for the Council - and you. Join us now and you’ll build a real legacy, helping us to shape a better city for all.

The opportunity

We’re on a journey of real change, growth and confidence in the future. We’re hosting the 2022 Commonwealth Games, so we’re set to take our place on the international stage and make the most of the opportunities this will bring to our wonderfully diverse communities. This is one of a number of influential new senior roles for collaborative people, motivated by doing what’s right for our city and residents. Together, we’ll make Birmingham an even better place to live and thrive in.

The role

Our vision of the future includes a strong focus on environmental issues and creating a safe, well-presented city scape. Joining the council as part of a new streamlined leadership team, you’ll have responsibility for a portfolio of services including Waste Management, Street Cleansing, Grounds Maintenance and Parks & Nature. You’ll ensure statutory functions such as waste management are properly fulfilled and that we have the resources, including a properly trained workforce, to deliver on our targets. Working with partners including the private sector and other public agencies you will translate strategic priorities into operational plans to ensure we deliver on the needs of a 21st century city.

The person

You’ll bring senior-level experience of managing change within a public sector context. This should include a good grasp of the statutory and regulatory responsibilities of local government, and the ability to strategically manage finance within challenging budgets. You’ll combine this with business acumen, entrepreneurial flair and the ability to innovate. Experience of developing effective working relationships with diverse stakeholders and negotiating with outside agencies is essential. The pace will be rapid so you’ll need to be focused on delivery, but as priorities may change, flexibility and adaptability are also important.  You’ll hold a professionally qualification in a relevant area.
