Building a Better Brent

Brent is a tremendously vibrant London borough where the iconic arch of Wembley Stadium dominates the skyline. Spanning both inner and outer London, it is a borough of huge contrasts in terms of its economic, environmental, ethnic and social make up. Brent’s diversity is evident to all who visit our borough and our long history of ethnic and cultural diversity has created a place that is truly unique and valued by those who live and work here.

The council is pursuing a far-reaching transformation agenda that better meets the needs of our community so it is an exciting time to join us.

The Post

This important post involves leading the Spatial Planning team (approximately 11 staff working planning policy, CIL and S106, and place-making functions). The successful applicant will have responsibility for getting a new local plan in place, work closely with Members and with colleagues within the Council on ‘place-making’ schemes and initiatives, and be responsible for implementing improvements across the Spatial Planning function, including developing a commercial approach.

Brent is at an exciting time in terms of spatial planning, with a new Local Plan and site allocations to take to adoption, exploring intensification and co-location on industrial sites, supporting the proposed West London Orbital rail line and masterplanning nearby sites, working with colleagues in Development Management, transport, housing and property colleagues to deliver a target of over 2,000 homes a year and support the ongoing regeneration of Wembley, Alperton and other growth areas.

About you

The successful candidate will be passionate about planning and be able to develop good and effective relationships with people. Combined with a drive for plan-making and place-making, you will need to an experienced local authority planner, collaborative worker and manager. We are seeking a dynamic individual for this role and to work with the Head of Planning, Members, colleagues and other partners.

You will put the customer at the heart of the service, have a ‘can do’ approach, and excellent interpersonal skills. If you have the drive, skills and knowledge to deliver on our ambitions we would like to hear from you.

The Environment

Brent’s new Civic Centre brings together the many services of Brent Council under one roof, incorporating a state-of-the-art modern library and a range of civic and community spaces. The new Civic Centre is located on Engineers Way, adjacent to Arena Square and Wembley Arena and just outside Wembley Stadium making this state of the art building a beautiful environment to work in. The London Designer Outlet is a couple of minutes’ walk away. There is a lot going on in Wembley Park.
